R.I.P – The Video Recorder

Video

Digital TV means the end for video

The video recorder – Thank You! You changed our lives and changed the way we watched TV.  Long before the internet, long before DVD’s, long before satellite television you came along and gave us freedom.  Freedom to watch what we wanted, when we wanted.  You put an end to family arguments – now we can watch one program, without missing another favourite on the other side, at the same time. And you brought the big night out home as we settled down together in our comfy sofas to watch a blockbuster movie. The video recorder, or VCR, really did change family entertainment.

But now, alas, your days are done.  Killed off by digital TV.  Digital TV that gives us so many more channels to watch.  So much more that, more than ever, we need something to record our favourite shows on.  But it won’t be you, the humble VCR as you can’t record digital TV, so thank you, and good bye.

VHS Tape

Hard Drive Recorders mean you don't need these any more.

Now it’s the turn of hard drive recorders, digital DVD recorders and other forms of digital TV recorders. No more big, bulky tapes, the cassette has been replaced by the thin, shiny, DVD that does the job so much better.  Or choose a hard disc recorder that stores your TV onto a disc inside the machine.  Either way, you can record digital TV, but not with your old video recorder.  It’s served you well, but now you

need to replace it with a digital DVD recorder or a hard disc recorder so that you can still enjoy watching what you want to, when you want to.
